remembering dash snow...

dash snow was an up and coming underground artist from nyc, best known for his sculpture, photography, and collages. his work has been compared to ryan mcginley and larry clark, in that it consumes a documentary style of illicit nature including drug use, sex, and violence. i see his photography as an autobiography of the infamous debauchery he lived, that is often associated with young ny artists. dash was also known for this thievery and graffiti. he founded a graft crew called the irak crew. "rak" means to steal in slang.

dash lived a short life, passing away at the age of 27 from a drug overdose, as confirmed by his grandmother. he was found at the layfayette house, a downtown ny hotel.

some of his polaroid work can be seen on tinyvices.com

to read more about dash snow and friends, check out the new york times mag piece on him: chasing dash snow aka "sace irak crew". its like 9 pages long...

im not a heathan. and i'm not cold as ice or inhuman either. i've just been trying to wrap my head around all this attention on the king of pop. i don't even want to get into it, but i just think everyone should remember: michael jackson was human.

i see his influence long after his death, but as soon as this fall's fashion week. trend forecast to come later...

consumers, rest your pretty lil' head...

upon being bored last night, and not wanting to rest my eyes so early, i opted for a lil design history refreshner. i grabbed a book of interest, one on furniture design, and jumped on the bed. what was unexpected about my excitement was the foreign words laid out on each page. i assumed there would be translation on the next page, or in the latter half of the book, but with the beautiful images and minimal english titles, who needs to read more? the "fantastically awesome" photographs of furniture and advertisements and preliminary sketches were more than enough to keep you turning pages. i became immediately engaged by german designer, stiletto. his avant-garde pieces were more expressive and communicative than functional. with his consumer's rest series the message was simple:  "we as consumers have become products, sitting in comfort in our own wagon".
the design was rather genius and i can see it lent some inspiration to the commes de garcon store designer for the their l.a pop up shop...

owning one of stiletto's pieces is almost impossible. his work is some of the most sough after in the german artsosphere. the collectors pass each piece around for insane amounts of dough, but if you are interested in owning a little piece of stiletto and can settle for a miniature replica, for a small fortune, click  here...

shades of green...

for the previous post, i googled "shades of green", and found this wikipedia page. its absolutely extraaoooordinary. green is one of my favorite colors. its very soothing and serene, yet can be vibrant and electrifying. the color is associated with tranquility, growth, harmony, safety, good luck, and health. it is thought to relieve stress and help heal. those who have a green work environment experience fewer stomachaches. researchers have also found that green can improve reading ability. you may find that laying a transparent sheet of green paper over reading material increases reading speed and comprehension. and sometimes the color green can be used in decorating for its calming effects. explore more colors for yourself. crayola and prisma didn't create all the colors you can paint your world with...

this 4th of july had a double celebration for my boo, nikki. miss nikki is going half way across the world to south africa to study abroad. she even prepared herself by growing a lioness mane. i am sure she will come back from this trip enlightened, wiser, and more fearless than a new yorker.

i love you girl. have fun.

so i've decided...

to take more initiative in my life and pursue more opportunities. this applies to all aspects of my life. i feel like i've been a bit too relaxed in my approach. i mean, things have really worked out in my favor because i believe god is really looking out for me, but just think how much greater and fulfilling my life could be if i actually put forth some effort. to be honest, i've been on cruise control for a minute, but i'm now living in a city with some competition. and i don't mean like qualified opponents, but just persistant candidates who know how to bullshit. basically, i need to step up to the plate, and bring it. i think its about time to see what ashley really has to offer this world. i am more than just a cute face.

i hope to make a mark in the world of design. i don't need to be famous, which is what everyone else in our generation is looking for. i just need to know that my work and p.o.v is appreciated, i.e a cult following. and that cult will appreciate all the side projects that follow as well.

and you, lil reader, can be a part of that cult, if you really like this blog. this blog is an extention of me, myself, as a brand. i promise, i won't poison you. i only want to delight you with my creations.
