if you don't know who this is, you need to get familiar. she's pretty awesome.
editor & founding partner of alldaybuffet.org. granola values, l.a party style, and nyc work ethic. sound crazy? it is. but what might seem like contradictory traits makes for a smooth bold blend of social action and just plain being social - all wrapped up in one tiny asian lady. she does everything from editing blogs, to planning events, to writing proposals, but really, she just tries hard and loves extremes and sincerity because they’re both honest.
simply put: she's a social innovator. at alldaybuffet.org, a non-for-profit organization, their mission is to bring awareness to social issues and inspire action, all while having fun at the same time. "because doing good shouldn't feel like a chore."
her newest venture is "the feast". what started as a conference for social innovators has now been broken down in to a mini series of programs curated to exchange ideas in an open, yet intimate environment with like minds. "the feast brings together the world's leading creative entrepreneurs, revolutionaries, radicals, doers and thinkers to inspire more action, share best practices, and create valuable connections that will change the world."
i recently attended the first of the summer series on monday. i sat with industry professionals at the apartment, a thought provoking environment perfect for this audience. when you walked in, you were asked to create a name tag with your name and why you were awesome. mine's said "ashley havis. i'm a leo." nuff said! this was a great conversation starter. some people were modest, some were funny with theirs, nonetheless, you met people who had a common goal of wanting to be inspired to do good in the world. there were about 50 innovators in the room ready to listen to 3 seperate life changing stories.
the 3 speakers present were noah brier of likemind, steve larosiliere of stoked mentoring, and perry chen from kickstarter. each of these presenters had an idea, and just approached this idea with passion, having no idea of the outcome. and to their surprise, that idea proved to be well received, beyond their hopes and dreams. and that's the point. you should be able to blindly pursue your concepts without worrying. just do it. and that's the easiest way to put it. put it out there in the universe and do it. its all about the action. that's the hardest part for people. everyone has an idea, but less than half of the population will actually pursue that idea or dream.
lets start being people of action. once you attempt it, you can't have any regrets about it, because at least you tried. and that's what ny is teaching me. you have to try. donald trump is a firm believer in "try, try, try again". thats how i got to ny. i said to myself, if i don't at least attempt to go to ny, i'll be mad at myself for as long as i live. and now i'm here. i didn't have a grand plan at all, and still don't, but things are working out for me. i'm blessed everyday that i surround myself with likeminded and inspiring people. i'm happy to have met jerri via email, and taking the time help her spread her organization to a new city. from meeting her, i've been exposed to exceptional people and stimulating environments. she has changed my world, which will in turn change someone else's world, for the better of course.
now how many people can you say that about?
